Aeonium arboreum, commonly known as the Tree Aeonium or Tree Houseleek, is a striking succulent plant native to the Canary Islands and North Africa. It is prized for its rosette-shaped leaves and tree-like structure, making it a popular choice for both garden landscapes and container gardening.

Key Features:

  • Growth Habit:

    • Aeonium arboreum typically grows as a small, branched shrub, reaching up to 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters) in height.
    • The plant develops thick, woody stems that branch out, each topped with a rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves.
    • The overall appearance is reminiscent of a miniature tree, which is why it's commonly called the Tree Aeonium.
  • Foliage:

    • The rosettes of Aeonium arboreum can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) across. The leaves are typically a bright green color, although some varieties, like Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop', have deep purple or almost black leaves.
    • The leaves are fleshy and waxy, helping the plant retain moisture in arid environments.
  • Flowers:

    • In late winter to early spring, Aeonium arboreum produces tall, conical clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers that rise above the foliage.
    • After flowering, the rosette that produced the flowers will die, but the plant usually produces offsets (new rosettes) to continue growing.
  • Light and Soil Requirements:

    • This plant prefers full sun to light shade. In areas with very intense sunlight, some afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorching.
    • It thrives in well-draining soil, typical of succulents. A sandy or gritty soil mix is ideal, and it's important to avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
