Morus alba, commonly known as the white mulberry, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to China. It has become widely cultivated in many parts of the world for its fruits, leaves, and as an ornamental plant.

Characteristics:

  • Size and Growth Habit: White mulberry trees can grow between 30 to 60 feet tall (9 to 18 meters) with a similar spread. They have a broad, rounded shape when mature and a dense canopy.
  • Leaves: The leaves are simple, alternate, and usually lobed, especially on young shoots. They are bright green, turning yellow in the fall, and are often glossy.
  • Flowers: The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring. Male and female flowers are typically found on separate trees (dioecious), but some trees can be monoecious, having both types.
  • Fruits: The fruits are small, multiple fruits that resemble blackberries. They start off white or green, ripen to a pink or purplish-black, and are sweet and edible when fully ripe. The fruiting season usually occurs in late spring to early summer.
